Hello, bigrat here. Today I am going to be sharing some of my knowledge concerning WorldMachine and WorldPainer, the two programs I use to create terrain.
This one will be focused on turning that heightmap into a minecraft map, and painting the surface terrain, and exporting it into a playable minecraft map.
Part 1 was focused on creating a heightmap in World Machine. Check that out here:
World Painter - What is it? Where do I get it?
WorldPainter may be a bit more well-known to minecrafters than worldmachine, since it was built specifically for creating minecraft maps.
It allows for easy manipulation of the height and surface terrain of your maps, as well as offering tools for object cover, and cave/tunnel layers.

When you first open up world painter, your screen will look like this:
Take a look at some of the boxes on the sides. Tools, Layers, Terrain, Brushes, and Brush settings.
Layers: When equipped, these paint things like chasms, trees, biomes, snow, and other objects.
Tools: Tools are used for manipulating water, and land height such as raising land, smoothing land, and filling areas with water or lava.
Terrain: This is the surface blocktype. This is used for covering areas in snowblocks, stone, clay, dirt, you name it.
Brushes: Brushes control the shape of whatever you paint.
Brush Settings: This is where you can adjust the brush rotation, opacity, and maks. I will go into some of these height and slope masks later.
Experiment around with these on the default world!
Importing a WorldMachine Heightmap
Now, lets take our terrain we made in worldmachine, and import it into worldpainter.
Head up to file -> import -> heightmap and choose the image you exported in world machine.
Here you can adjust the water height, and some other settings like terrain layers. If you want, you can delete all the terrain layers since we will be going over everything anyway. I am going to set my water height to 0 for this tutorial so I am sure I won't get any water.
Then press OK. Your terrain will then be imported!
To make sure everything looks ok, go to View -> show 3D view. Something like this will show up.
After looking at this, I sometimes go back into WorldMachine and make a few changes, but this looks ok for now.
You can see that there is some frost layer on the top of the mountains, and I don't really want that. You can remove layers by selecting that layer and then selecting a brush and then right clicking over the terrain.
Painting Terrain / Masks
In this section I will be going over painting our terrain and some of the masks I use.
First, I am going to cover with a snow terrain brush since I am going for something cold and high altitude.
Now this really doesn't look very interesting, so this is where some of the masks come in.
If you look at any mountains, they aren't completely covered in snow.
The steep sections are often bare, while the flatter areas are covered. We can do this in world painter by using above/below degree mask.
I am going to take a stone brush and coat everywhere over that has a slope higher than 55 degrees with stone.
This looks a lot better.
Custom Object Layers / Trees
What this map needs now are some trees. Before you go through these steps, find some trees that you like and want to be added. I often use lentebrijuso's tree repositories. However, if you are planning on using the map for a hypixel submission, you may not use someone else's tree repository. You must make your own trees.
For my PMC projects I often use this
In these downloads they contain a grid world with the filenames next to each tree. Fly around and write down the ID's that you want to use. Then go in world painter to the layers box.
Click the + button and select Add a Custom Object Layer t
To select which trees you want, click the button on the side that looks like a lego with a green +. Find the directory for the tree pack and open up the BO2 or schematic folder. I would recommend using the BO2 files since you don't need to modify the height offset. In schematics, you may get the tree being put on the top of the ground rather than down a bit, exposing the roots, if it applies.
It is important to add the air bo2/schematic in as well. This will help control the tree density. If you double click air you can also change the percentage. If you find your trees being way to dense in your world, you can increase it up to 200 or 300%.
Press Ok and select the layer! You can paint this around like any other layer though I would again suggest a very low strength and not a solid brush.
I also use the degree and height masks for this to avoid getting trees way on the summit and not on the cliff faces.
Exporting Your Map
Now, we get to turn our world painter map into a minecraft map!
Go to file - > Export -> Export as New Minecraft Map
And you will get a new window. One thing I would suggest here is only to export the map and not the gray border that world painter added in. You can do that by clicking Export Selected Tiles above the export button.
Press export and you are done! Open up your world and see how it looks! Many times I have to go back into world painter and make some edits such as editing how many trees there are. Sometimes I even go back into world machine and make some changes there and restart in worldpainter.

I wanted to give World Painter for Minecraft another go, as I am planning to create a huge adventure world later this month. So I put together an area of map which I will be building a timelapse on. Snow capped moutains, rivers, pine forests and lakes.
