RAR File - What is it and how do I open it?

    Opening RAR files

Did your computer fail to open a RAR file? We explain what RAR files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your RAR files.

    What is a RAR file?

Files that contain the .rar file extension are archive files that have been created by the WinRAR file archiving software. The WinRAR application takes large files or collections of files and compresses those files into a single archive file.

Compressed files makes it easier for users to share files via email and over the Internet. For example, if you needed to email multiple file attachments to an individual, you could compress them into a single RAR file, sending one attachment rather than many.

When the WinRAR archiver creates an archive, the resulting archive file is given the .rar file extension. RAR files are very similar to ZIP files but WinRAR uses a different compression algorithm, often resulting in smaller files.

Try a universal file viewer By Prof. Jones (The File Expert) What is a file extension?

A file extension is the characters after the last dot in a file name. For example, in the file name "winmail.dat", the file extension is "dat". It helps Windows select the right program to open the file.

RAR File (What It Is - How To Open One)

A RAR file (short for a Roshal Archive Compressed file) is a compressed file, or data container, that holds one or more other files and folders inside of it.

Think of a RAR file like a regular folder on your computer, where there are sometimes many other files and folders inside of it for the purpose of organizing them.

However, unlike a normal folder, a RAR file needs special software (more on this below) to open and "extract" out the contents.

Tip:  Most file extensions are pronounced as their individual letters, but RAR is usually treated as a word itself, and pronounced as "rahr."

What Are RAR Files Used For?

You'll probably only run in to a RAR file when you're downloading computer software. File sharing websites and software distributors sometimes put their files in a RAR file so that they can compress it down to a smaller size, allowing you to download it faster than you otherwise could.

Apart from just saving on download time, RAR files can also be protected with a password and encrypted so that the contents inside of them stay hidden unless you know the password.

Think of this like a little locked box full of data, with the password being the key.

Most RAR files won't have a password protecting them, being used to store images, documents, videos, or whatever type of file the author wanted.

Another time a RAR file might be useful is when a friend has a long list of files they want to share with you, like photos, for example. Instead of having you download every single image file individually, your friend can first compile the photos into a RAR file, and then share just that one file with you.

Once you open a RAR file, you can extract out the data from the inside and then use the files like you would any other file on you computer.

How To Open a RAR File

Windows computers don't have a baked-in ability to open RAR files. If you double-click or double-tap a RAR file without having specific software installed to open it, you'll probably see one of the following messages: "Windows cannot open this file"  or "How do you want to open this type of file (.rar)?" .

RAR is actually the native format of an archive program called WinRAR. The only problem with using WinRAR is that it's not free! Before you run off and buy it, however, you should know that there are plenty of free RAR openers that can do the exact same thing but at zero cost.

I've used a lot of un-RAR tools and, in my opinion, the best is the free 7-Zip  program.

How to Open RAR Files With 7-Zip

Download 7-Zip. Once installed, you should set it up to automatically associate itself with RAR files so that, going forward, you'll be able to just double-click or double-tap a RAR file anywhere on your computer and it'll open automatically in 7-Zip.

Do this by opening 7-Zip File Manager  after installing the program in Windows. From the Tools  menu in 7-Zip, choose Options. , and then place a check next to rar. Save the changes with the OK  button.

Note:  If after doing this, 7-Zip still doesn't open RAR files when you double-click them, see How Do I Change the Default Program for a Specific File Extension?  for help. If you go this route, you'll need to know the install location of 7-Zip File Manager, which on most computers will be "C:\Program Files (x86)\7-Zip\7zFM.exe".

You can also open RAR files with 7-Zip by right-clicking on them and choosing 7-Zip > Open archive  from the pop-up context menu.

More Free Programs That Can Open RAR Files

7-Zip isn't the only free program that can open RAR files. PeaZip  and jZip  are two alternative RAR openers.

Mac users should be able to download and use Keka. The Unarchiver. or RAR Extractor Free to unload RAR files.

Another method is to use Unzip-Online. which lets you open RAR files without having any software installed, thanks to the fact that it works through your web browser.

More download links to free RAR extractors can be found in this list of  free file extractor programs .

Note:  WinZip Free is often suggested as a free RAR opener, but it's really just trialware. There's no reason to use trial software or buy a RAR extractor when there are plenty of completely free ones, many of which I mentioned above.

Cracking a Password Protected RAR File

As I mentioned above, some RAR files can be secured behind a password. With those RAR files, you'll need to enter a password before you can unpack the files out of the archive.

One problem with password protecting a RAR file is that you may have made your own RAR archive and secured it with a password, but have since forgotten what that password is! This is where a RAR password cracker comes in handy.

One particularly effective, and completely free, program that can break the password on a RAR file is RAR Password Cracker Expert. It can use a brute force and/or a dictionary attack (with included wordlists) to attempt every possible angle at recovering the password. Lots of different options let you customize how the different attacks should work.

If the above program isn't able to unlock your RAR file, you should give Free RAR Password Recovery  a try. It uses brute force to make guessing attempts at the password. It supports trying numbers, symbols, capital letters, latin, and spaces.

How To Convert a RAR File

To convert a RAR file means to change it from a file with the RAR extension to a file with a different extension, usually 7Z , ZIP. LGH, TGZ , TAR. CAB, or some other archive format.

Before we get too far into RAR converting, I want to clarify something important. There's no converting from a RAR file to a non-zipped format. Spend much time searching around for RAR files and you'll see search suggestions like "RAR to MP3 converter" or "RAR to PDF converter". none of which actually exist!

Like I've already talked about, a RAR file is similar to a folder that contains  other files. If your RAR file contains MP3 files, for example, you must open the RAR file. not convert it, to get the MP3s. See the How To Open a RAR File  section above to learn how to actually unpack the MP3s (or PDFs. or whatever is in the RAR file that you want access to).

Now, if converting a RAR file to a ZIP or 7Z file (other archive formats) is actually what you want to do, keep reading. there are a few ways to do this.

    Free RAR Converters

The quickest and most effective method to converting a RAR to ZIP, or any other common archive format, is with a free file converter  like Zamzar  or FileZigZag. These two RAR converters are online services, which means you just upload the RAR file to the website and then download the converted file.

A free online RAR converter is perfect if the RAR file you're working with is small, but you probably don't want to use an online converter on a large RAR file. You'd first have to wait for the RAR file to upload, and then wait for the converted file to download, something that might take quite a while for a really large file.

If you're converting a large RAR file, I recommend using a free tool like IZArc. It's super easy to convert a RAR to 7Z, or one of several other archive file formats, from IZArc's Tools  menu.

How to Make a RAR File

Finding a free tool that can build  a RAR file isn't as easy as finding one that can open  RAR files. This is because software developers must have explicit permission from Alexander Roshal (the copyright owner) in order to re-create the RAR compression algorithm.

The best suggestion I have for creating a RAR file is to use the trial version of WinRAR. Though it's a timed trial, technically valid for less than 30 days, it's the easiest way to build a new RAR file.

Note:  I would generally recommend that you choose not to compress files in the RAR format, mostly because there are so many other, more widely available, compression formats, like ZIP and 7Z

    More Information on RAR Files

Though you probably won't ever find one this large, the maximum file size of any RAR file is just under 8 exbibytes. That's over 9 million terabytes!

Chrome OS is one operating system  that natively supports RAR file extractions, much like how Windows natively supports unpacking ZIP archives. This means Chrome OS can get files out of a RAR file without using any third-party software.

Open Facebook When Blocked In School College Office

How To Access Facebook When it is Blocked in School College Or Office

Did you try to open Facebook when blocked in school, college or office? In most cases, you can’t! This happens because the network admin blocks Facebook behind some firewall thus preventing people from getting access to it. If you are Facebook addicted like me, you must have tried some methods to open Facebook when it is blocked by the administrator. And, I’m sure that you end up with some unsuccessful attempts.

Most of the schools, colleges or offices keep the social networking sites blocked so that the students or employees cannot open it. That is why we receive many emails asking “how to access Facebook if blocked “.

How to open Facebook when it is blocked in your office or school

Here are some tricks by which you can get on Facebook from a fire-walled network. It is impossible to guess about how your network admin as blocked Facebook behind a Firewall. Therefore, we can’t give you any specific solution to get access to Facebook. But, you can try the following methods one by one and check which works for you.

Access or Log into Facebook using Google Public/Open servers

The URL https://www.Facebook.com that you generally type in the address bar is originally an IP address. Every website has a unique IP address(*). When you browse any website by typing the website URL, your computer tries to match the URL name with its IP address by contacting the DNS server.

DNS server is a computer, registered with the network which keeps the data of all the websites and corresponding IP addresses. So, any one can block the IP address in DNS server to prevent access of a website.

    * In a shared server, same IP address is shared by more than one website. But the large and popular websites like Facebook, Orkut etc. do have their own unique IP’s.

Some time the Facebook.Com is blocked at your school or office because the administrator has blocked it from the DNS server. In such a case, you can use different DNS servers like OpenDNS Server or Google Public DNS Server to get on Facebook if it’s been blocked by the admin.

    For the Windows user:

    • Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections and.
    • Right-click on the connection status icon which you are using to access internet.
    • Now, choose “Properties” and then “Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)” .
    • Put any one of the following values in the DNS Server address:

Make sure that your institution or office is not using the same DNS which you’re going to use. Once you change the DNS Server, you can get into the Facebook.

Open Facebook when blocked using IP address

Sometime the computer admin can edit the hosts file to block Facebook. He/she adds the website domain name to the block list in host file. In that case, you can get access to Facebook by the IP address instead of the domain address. Putting the IP address in your browser directly, will bypass the barrier from the host file. You can obtain the IP address by pinging Facebook.com from your computer.

In Windows system, Press Win + R key. It opens the Run command box. Put the following command and hit Enter .

This will open a command prompt and it will show the IP address of Facebook.com.

Often, chances are that the command prompt is disabled for the current user. In that case, get the Facebook address from this web tool. Once you go to that website, just type facebook.com at where they ask to put it and click on Get IP .

Once you obtain the IP address, put that in your browser address bar and hit Enter .

The Linux and MAC user can use the ping command into the Terminal to get the IP address.

Use Shortened URLs to access blocked websites

In many situations, the site URL may be banned for you. In such a case, you can use a shortened URL to bypass the blocking system. You can use some URL shortening services like goo.gl or bit.ly to access blocked sites.

Access Facebook using Proxy Websites when blocked by the administrator

Proxy websites can be used to open blocked URLs in your computer. But generally, the proxy websites are also blocked in your school, colleges or office. Therefore this tricks may not sound much. But you can try to find out some unblocked proxy sites.

Open Facebook through Secured Proxy servers

Using a secured-web proxy sites is the easiest and safest way to open Facebook if blocked. It safely allows you to browse any website you want. But, not all the secured proxy would work with Facebook as they are not optimized fo it. Among the bunch of the working proxies, I found www.securitales.com as the best.

Using this service, you can open any website from anywhere. Like you can open Twitter from Iran or access Facebook in China. The best side of this website is that it won’t ask you to install any application in your computer. It also supports the Facebook chat, photo uploading etc. It is totally secured for you as it uses the HTTPS protocol. But this service is not totally free. It lets you to use their service only for 10 minutes as a free trial. If you are not thinking about the money, you can give it a try as it does not charge too much.

But, if you don’t want to spend your penny just for the Facebook, you can give the following free proxy services a try.

    1. Facebridge.net
    2. Facebookoxy.com
    3. 4Freeproxy.com
    4. Maverickeyes.com
    5. ProxyUs.org
    6. USAproxy.org
    7. Studylog.org

Build own proxy server using Google App to unblock Facebook access alternatively and open it from any place. Because unknown proxies can’t be blocked by system admin.

Stay connected with Facebook from your email account

Facebook allows you to choose which updates do you want to get as notification in your email account. Once you set your account to receive notifications in your email account, you can then check the activities. Log-in to your Facebook account and go to Account > Account Settings .

In the Notification tab, you can manage your notifications preferences. Once you setup, they will be sent to your email id. Whenever you get that message in your inbox, just open it, click on the link which indicates the option to reply the message. You are done!

Browse Facebook mobile version through Opera Mini browser

If nothing of the above works for you, try the mobile version of the website to access Facebook if blocked by a network barrier. Facebook has a different web address for the mobile version. Sometime, the network admins may forget to include the mobile address into the baring system. So if you are lucky, you can browse Facebook with its mobile version.

You can use the Opera Mini browser to open Facebook in fire-walled network through its mobile version. Though the Opera Mini Browser is a mobile browser, it also has a demo version to try the mobile version from the desktop.

You can also type http://m.facebook.com at your desktop browser to visit the Facebook mobile version.

Use VPN for a secured access of any website

The best solution to open Facebook if blocked by your network administrator or ISP is using a VPN. By using a VPN, you can get on Facebook as well as other websites you like. I have researched on this and found VPN as the best solution. Give any VPN service a try to access Facebook from anywhere you like.

There may be various reasons for what you can’t open Facebook. The admins can apply various tricks to block Facebook from the network. Therefore, we have added some workarounds that you should try with your system before you play with the above tricks.

    Check your system host file

The first thing that you need to do for breaking the blocking firewall is double-checking the system host file. The host file can be used to block any website easily.

In Windows, you can find the host file at System drive (C:) > Windows > System32 > Drivers > Etc. Open that file using any text editor. It should look like this:

Check whether the name Facebook.Com is listed there. If yes, delete the entire line containing the word Facebook.

The MAC users can reach to the host file from the terminal. To open terminal, navigate to Applications > Utility > Terminal and type

into the command window. This will open the host file which should look like this:

Look for any suspicious line which contains ‘facebook’. If you find such one, delete immediately and save the file. You can save the changes by pressing the [Command] + [O] key combination.

Once you edit the host file and remove the blocking lines, restart the system and try to open Facebook from your browser address bar.

Check for suspicious process at system task manager

If none of the above works for you, look into your system task manager for any suspicious process. Terminate the process which do not have any relation with your system. Rarely, the Facebook denies your system if it is infected with malware or virus.

If the network admin is experienced enough, the above methods may not work and you can’t reach to Facebook. Do you have any other idea to open Facebook when it is blocked by the network admin or ISP? Do share with us.

Note: This tutorial was written depending on various experiments and implementations. Some time some methods may or may not work for you.

Open a file instead of save it - Opera Forums

Open a file instead of save it

I searched but didn't found any solution.

Using Opera 20 and when I download, lets say, a ZIP file, in Opera 12 I was able to open the file without having to save it to a specific location. In 20, I have to save the file or cancel.

    44 Replies - 13082 Views

None of them do what I want. And I'm not the only one.

Daniel Aleksandersen, designer @Opera. wrote this:

It is a design decision based on the fact that everyone have enormous amounts of storage space available. You can clean up >your Downloads folder once in a while instead of having to decide between saving and opening files.

The old Open button in legacy Opera’s Download dialog but files in a cache folder instead of the Downloads folder. This >confused the heck of many who could not find where their files were stored (because either option would store the >downloaded file on the system).

The new way is easier to use because the same thing always happen when you download a file. But some control of individual >files is taken away to achieve this.

It is a simplification of a regular task that did not need to be as complicated as it was.

Click on a file download link, let it download, and then double-click on it. Having an Open dialog would require us to have >a Save dialog too. This is not likely to change.

And some more comments about this approach and that makes life easier for users with no experience!

It makes no sense! At least, make "open" an option! Or an extension / power user.

I want to open a Zip file, extract the content and Opera automatically delete the temporary file after closing! Same to flash updates, small programs, etc.

I don't want to download, open and then navigate to folder and delete the file!

Opera is dumbing down and limiting user choices.
